Question : please read ....OK, i bought a phone off ebay, a cheap fairly old nokia, like new, as a backup, a nokia 1600 !! anyway..
The guy selling it said he didnt know what network is was on but his vodafone sim worked in it..
Ok, so phone arrived and i put my virgin sim in and it said locked...
So...i looked online for a free unlocker and found a free online one which i put my imei number in and i said it was on vodafone u.k when it asked for the network, i will link to the website i used below
Then it came up with 7 unlock codes but in red writing it said it recomended using the last one, the 7th ?? So anyway i used it and it worked and unlocked my phone.
My question is: whats the catch ?? Why are they providing the codes for free and does using the code they recommend give them access to my texts or mobile number etc, or am i being paranoid ?? whats the significance of that code it mentioned out of the 7 it generated ? It said something like Recommended CODE :#pw+853 etc...
heres the website i used, any advice on my question appreciated

For some older Nokia handsets, the unlocking code is easily calculated from the IMEI using simple maths. A website can offer a free unlock because the tiny (virtually zero) cost of calculating the code is met by advertising.
There is more than one code because there is more than one way to lock a handset.

Yes, but it generated 7 possible codes, but said in red letters ' we recomend this one'
I wonder why they said they recomended that one ?? I used it anyway and it unlocked my phone, so thats good....but i wondered if they would now have my mobile number and would at some point send marketing to me via texts etc. Maybe im being overly suspicious and paranoid !! ??
Ive unliocked them in the past using code calculators, but couldnt seem to find one to do it this time around so used the online method instead

Gsmliberty have been around since the time I had phone shops, I very much doubt they would be setting up a scam for IMEI numbers and still be collecting them 10 years later without having been found out.
I seem to recall the +7 code was one of the more common ones used on most Nokias at that time, probably why they recommend you try it first.

Swapping sims give you a different imei every time. Even if you put the original one back in phoning *06# or whatever to display the imei number on the screen, the imei number on the screen is different to the one that is written at the side of the box.
I used 2 or 3 sims in a Samsung s3350 with Tesco mobile which the phone was locked to. I tried to unlock it via an app downloaded from google play store with the original sim that came with the phone. But the imei I entered off the screen was the wrong one to unlock it, and it made a complete mess of it so I had to go to an unlockers in town to sort it out.

The IMEI is permanently attached to the phone, not the SIM card - and indeed it is illegal to change a phone's IMEI in the UK.
Are you thinking of the IMSI?

    no they don't.
    sorry, but you're 100% wrong.
IMEI is a hard coded identifier within the hardware of the device itself.
it is not linked to or tied to a SIM in any way.

Oh dear, this must be one of those posts you just wish you could delete or edit away
You realise you've just confessed to breaking the law? (Or you would have if it was actually possible to do what you dreamt you did) ;-).
Have you ever heard of the Mobile Telephones (Re-Programming) Act 2002?

There was no intent to deliberarely defraud Tesco Mobile and Samsung electronics.
You would have to show intent to re-engineer the phone to alter the imei number on purpose. You seriously believe I went all out to alter it on purpose.
I have used 2 or 3 Tesco mobile PAYG sims on the phone to use up the credit. And I was only trying to unlock the phone myself at a later date so that I could use another network's PAYG sim on it, but it went totally wrong

There is no element of fraud involved, so that is immaterial, if you change or interfere with an IMEI (or attempt to change or interfere with an IMEI) the offence is complete.
Tthere are no exclusions beyond being the manufacturer or doing so with the prior written permission of the manufacturer.
You playing with an unlocker or unlocking codes that changes the IMEI means you have done what you shouldn't, unless you have written permission from Samsung to do so.

(1)A person commits an offence if—
(a)he changes a unique device identifier, or
(b)he interferes with the operation of a unique device identifier.
(2)A unique device identifier is an electronic equipment identifier which is unique to a mobile wireless communications device.
(3)But a person does not commit an offence under this section if—
(a)he is the manufacturer of the device, or
(b)he does the act mentioned in subsection (1) with the written consent of the manufacturer of the device.
(4)A person guilty of an offence under this section is liable—
(a)on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum or to both, or

Intent (or lack of knowledge of the law) doesn't mean you haven't committed a criminal offence for which you could get up to 5 years in prison or a very large fine (many thousands)

If somebody reports you to the police they are likely to investigate and you could find yourself being prosecuted. I would be very careful about publicly publishing that you've committed a criminal office.
The law is there to stop reported stolen phones being put back onto networks, if a changed MAC address is found it can be reported to the police and you can be arrested and charged for it.
